Traveling solo as a woman might sound a bit daunting but I promise you, it’s the best way not only to see the world, but to learn more about yourself and grow as a person by taking yourself out of your comfort zone. And, as a bonus, you will for sure make a lot of new friends along the way. I started solo traveling very early and consider myself a seasoned solo traveler. My first trip alone was at at the age of 17 to Hamburg, Germany, and I’ve been hooked ever since.
Now don’t get me wrong, I still love traveling with family and friends and sharing the emotions and memories with people I love but there’s just something about doing it alone. The best things in my humble opinion are the freedom, independence and just getting to really enjoy your own company. After years of solo travel, I’ve finally put together this ultimate guide consisting of my top 23 travel destinations for solo female travellers worldwide that offer safety, culture, stunning scenery, and a guaranteed great time you’ll remember your whole life. By the end of this list, I hope you’ll be inspired to take the first step and book your next (or first) solo travel. So let’s do this! Female empowerment!
The Caribbean
Personally, I am a big fan of the Caribbean islands, so let’s start from here! The sunny islands offer amazing sunrises and sunsets, stunning ocean views, warm weather, friendly locals and turquoise waters.
Bahamas

Wh you should go: The Bahamas is one of the most quintessential Caribbean islands. The island offers crystal-clear waters, some of the most stunning white-sand beaches you’ll ever see, and super-friendly locals. The Bahamas is not as crowded as some of the other Caribbean islands (unless you happen to walk around in the Nassau city center when a cruise ship has just landed). Weather you’d like to have a relaxing day at the beach, go golfing, spend your day at the zoo or shopping at the local markets, take a boat trip to the smaller Bahamian islands or go snorkeling to explore the diverse marine life, the Bahamas has it all and is the perfect place for relaxation and adventure alike.
Top tips:
- Solo female travel safety: 4/5. The Bahamas is generally safe for solo travelers, especially in resort areas, though it’s best to avoid or stay extra aware of your surroundings in the less busy areas.
- Travel budget: $$$
- Things to do: Snorkeling around Paradise Island (there’s lots of conch and puffer fish), exploring the colorful streets of Nassau, and swimming with the pigs in Exuma are some of the (very social media-friendly) highlights.
- Best time to go: Between December and April.
- Where to stay: If you’re traveling solo as a female, I’d recommend you making Nassau your base and taking day trips to the islands. If you can, get a hotel on the Paradise Island, as it’s separated from Nassau by a bridge that has 24/7 security and has a charge for drivers to cross it, making Paradise Island a super safe place to stay and way less crowded than Nassau. I stayed in the Warwick all-inclusive resort that offers amazing facilities, delicious food all-day long and is a 10-minute walk from the most beautiful beach on the Bahamas – Cabbage Beach.
Barbados

Why you should go: Barbados is an extremely dreamy place! Not only is it safe for solo female travellers, but also boasts the most welcoming friendly locals, vibrant culture and of course, Rihanna. Barbados also has stunning beaches lined with palm trees (very Instagram-friendly), delicious seafood, rich history and vibrant nightlife.
Top tips:
- Solo female travel safety: 4/5. Barbados is generally very safe, but avoid secluded beaches alone after dark.
- Travel budget: $$
- Things to do: Visit Bathsheba Beach, take a rum tasting and rum punch coctail-making tour at the Mount Gay distillery, watch the race horses swim in the sea at Pebble Beach, visit the Hunte’s Garden, join one of the many group tours for a food tasting in Bridgetown or explore the island’s UNESCO World Heritage-listed capital, Bridgetown. Also, if you’d like to splurge, don’t miss the Cliff restaurant. And lastly, as the island is so tiny, you can take a day tour that takes you through all the highlights (such as Rihanna’s childhood home, the rugged east side of the island and the Soup Bowl, and the very northern point of the island – Animal Flower Cave.
- Best time to go: Between December and April.
- Where to stay: I’d recommend staying around/near Dover beach. This is where the Sands resort is located but there are also loads of affordable hotels around there. I stayed in the budget-friendly Time Out Hotel next to the Sands resort and a 1-minute walk from the beach.

- Best time to go: Between April and May when the Sakura season is in full gear.
- Where to stay: I have been to Tokyo a couple of times and stayed in different locations and hotels, but by far, my favourite experience is staying in the ladies-only Centurion Cabin and Spa hotel in Akasaka. Not only do you get to use the free on-site spa facilities, such as an onsen sauna and warm beads to relax your feet in after a long day of walking around Tokyo, but you’ll also meet loads of fellow female travellers there.
Bali, Indonesia

Why should you go: The island is located in Southeast Asia and is popular among solo travelers due to its welcoming community. While I do agree that Bali has become extremely mainstream and suffering from over-tourism, it’s still one of my favourite solo trips I have taken and thus, has earned its place on the list. Bali’s laid-back vibe, beaches, cute puppies, temples, mindfulness and yoga retreats offer both relaxation and self-discovery.

- Where to stay: I’d recommend you make Canggu your base, as it’s easy to get around everywhere from there and there’s lots to do in Canggu as well. I stayed at the Udara Bali wellness resort, which is one of my favourite places I’ve ever spent time in, for two weeks and spent the last week at the luxorious Renaissance Hotel in Uluwatu, which features an amazing infinity pool and gives you so much bang for the buck.
Shanghai, China

Why should you go: China might not be on the top of your list as a solo female traveler but let me tell you, Shanghai is an amazing place to visit! you’ll be met with lots of modern skyscrapers but also historical sites, giving you a unique urban experience. For solo travelers, it’s a safe and exciting destination.

- Travel budget: $
- Things to do: Stroll along The Bund, visit Yu Garden, and try local street food in the markets in the French Concession.
- Best time to go: Any time of the year.

Hong Kong

Why should you go: I am biased, as Hong Kong is one of my favourite places ever! Why should you go: The surrounding little villages of Lake Como are the epitome of high-end Italy. I fully understand why George Clooney has made this stunning place his main base. Other than George Clooney, Lake Como is renowned for its breathtaking natural beauty, with mountains and luxurious lakeside villas. It’s only a short train ride away from Milan.

I would recommend staying in the Villa Copenhagen if you’re looking to splurge a bit (they have a super cool rooftop pool, an opulent bar and atrium downstairs and a lavish cafe), the unique sustainability-focused Carlton 66 Guldsmeden or in the futuristic CityHub Copenhagen pods if you’re on a budget.
Helsinki, Finland

Why should you go: Helsinki has a very laid-back vibe, maybe a little too laid back at times. If you’re after a social solo trip, maybe skip this one, as mingling with locals can be challenging. I stayed in Telegraaf Hotel (they have a breathtaking spa and a Michelin-star restaurant) and Hestia Hotel Barons. These two hotels are both in Old Town, just a 2-minute walk away from each other, so I’d recommend splitting your stay between them to maximise the experience.
Paris, France

Why should you go: I strongly believe you don’t even need a good reason to go to Paris because “Paris is always a good idea”, it is indeed the city of fashion, food, wine, art, architecture, and history. Wondering the streets of Paris, listening to podcasts is therapy in itself. And the best thing about it is that there’s so many free things to see and do that you’ll easily have an adventure of a lifetime on a low budget.

The upscale option, with amazing views over the city and mountains, would be Villa Sassa Hotel and the more budget-friendly option, with equally awesome scenic panorama is the Hotel Pestalozzi Lugano.
North America
New York City, USA

Why should you go: New York, New York! The unofficial capital of the world, offers an endless array of cultural and historic sites, mind-blowing food experiences, iconic landmarks, and diverse neighborhoods for solo exploration. - Where to stay: The safest area in NYC to stay in as a solo female traveler is Manhattan – SoHo, Chelsea, West Village, Upper East Side and Upper West Side are some of the best parts of Manhattan. Los Angeles, USA

Why should you go: If you’re looking to unleash the green-juice-drinking pilates girlie in yourself, it’s best to do it in LA. The vibes are immaculate! - Best time to go: The best time to visit LA is between June and September when it’s nice and toasty.
- Where to stay: LA is huge and getting around takes time, as the traffic is pretty bad and it’s the least walkable city. So, I’d recommend you break your stay between hotels in different areas. I stayed in the infamous and iconic (if you’ve ever played GTA, you will recognize it) Hollywood Roosevelt Hotel. PS, the hotel is said to be haunted by Marilyn Monroe. And in the Venice on the Beach Hotel that is right on the strip and directly by the sea.
San Francisco, USA

- Why should you go: San Francisco is such a vibrant city and there’s always so much to do as a solo traveler. It’s known for its tech scene, the Alcatraz prison island, the windy Lombard Street and scenic spots like the Golden Gate Bridge and Twin Peaks.

Africa
Zanzibar, Tanzania

Why should you go: Zanzibar – the spice island – is famous for its pristine sandy beaches, clear blue waters, warm weather all year round, friendly locals, and spice markets. Dubai, UAE

Why should you go: Dubai is a modern city where tradition meets luxury, offering everything from bustling souks to record-breaking skyscrapers. Dubai is known for its high safety standards, so it’s a top destination for solo female travelers. The only downside is that it can be on the more expensive end of the spectrum.
